Background and details to this fight between Reed and Hayes
The Enterprise crew gets support by the MACOs. The MACOs are very specialized "soldiers" respectively "task forces" of the Starfleet to support a crew in special situations. In this case the MACO should train the Enterprise crew and support them in the fight against the Xindy. The commander of this MACO force on the enterprise is no one other than Major Jeremiah Hayes (Steven Culp).
Normally the security officer of the starship is their commander, but in this episode, Hayes and Reed fight for the supremacy.
It begins when Mayor Hayes schedules martial arts training hours for the security team and the senior officers without making an arrangement with Lieutenant Reed before. Malcolm Reed becomes very angry that Jeremiah Hayes has passed him over.
Provocations, challenges and a hard fight between these two competitors follows.
So a lot of aggressive fight scenes are shown in this episode - together with a lot of sweat, drops of blood and black and blue marks (of the whole cast).
Reed and Hayes together have the most exhausting and difficult training and fight scenes - and we are all happy that we can enjoy watching Dominic Keating fighting and sweating. ;-)
The shot of these fight scenes lasted two half days - a lot of wonderful workout for our two brilliant actors! And we fans profit from it, from the result: the fantastically performed episode with Dominic Keating and Steven Culp.
All the best and a fantastic weekend!
Yours Gabi
